Draining the Water System in Your Home

If you do not know the specifics of your plumbing system, you want to have a licensed plumber inspect your home and its systems prior to winters freezing temperatures to prevent a broken pipe and the resultant water damage.

  • Shut off the main water value inside the home. If you do not have a convenient stop and drain valve, I would suggest having one installed. Make sure it drains all the water lines and there is no low lying valve

  • Open all the faucets to allow the pressure to release any water in the lines. (For single handle hot and cold valves open in the neutral position)

  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow for air circulation

  • If you choose to use anti-freeze in the traps, be sure to use a non-toxic RV type

  • If you are not going to occupy for a long period of time you may want to completely drain the water heater and add non-toxic anti-freeze to your dishwasher, each sink and shower drain and toilets.

If you have any questions, please give me a call and I can recommend a handyman or licensed professional to assist you.
