During our winter months at Tahoe, as the temperatures fall and we get into freezing temperatures here are some things to consider doing to protect your home and prevent unexpected problems. If you are not comfortable doing any of the following, I can recommend professional service people to assist you.
Exterior:
Close all sub area vents to prevent cold air under the home freezing pipes.
Disconnect and store all garden hoses
Clean all rain gutters if you have them.
Inspect your roof for loose or missing shingles. Consider a roof inspection.
Arrange for a snow removal service
Consider having the driveway sealed to prevent the freeze, thaw and heaving of asphalt and the resultant cracking and damage.
Decks and stairs should be sealed with a protective coating. If you have a spa, have it inspected and serviced or on a maintenance contract
Are there any trees limbs or vegetation that should be removed
Interior:
Have your furnace or heating system serviced along with any gas appliances
Replace the air filters.
Fireplaces, chimneys and wood stoves should be professionally cleaned
Replace the batteries in your smoke detectors
Turn down the temperature on the water heater. Install a H2O heater blanket.
I suggest leaving the heat at a minimum of 50 so that the home (and its contents) will heat up to a comfortable temp, when you arrive in a short period of time and minimize the expansion and contraction of the home and its contents.
Have flashlights and extra batteries in case of power outages.
